Kendrick Mountain

Sedona Arizona features a network of very accessible easy and beginner hiking trails through beautiful red rocks, but for those seeking a more challenging high country hiking experience, the San Francisco Peaks north of Sedona are just the ticket. One of the highest peaks is Kendrick Mountain, at 10,418 ft elevation; it is one of several dormant dome volcanos in the San Francisco volcanic field north of Sedona in Coconino County, Arizona.

Three maintained trails managed by the Kaibab National Forest, the Kendrick Mountain Trail, Pumpkin Trail, and Bull Basin Trail, lead hikers to the top of Kendrick Mountain and a fire lookout tower which is open during summer months. Often the lookout operator welcomes visitors to top of the tower to enjoy the incredible views.

Photos are the amazing art of Sedona photographer Ted Grussing. Above photo taken October 1, 2016, 9:05AM, 35,24.7739N 111,48.7953W, at an altitude of 3189.30 meters. After 10 years shooting autumn colors from the air, Ted says that 2016 is without question his best year so far. Kendrick Peak is center; to the left is Sitgreaves Mountain and Bill Williams Mountain.

UPDATE! Kendrick Peak about 1 month later:

Kendrick Peak, Arizona, November 2016 by Sedona photographer Ted Grussing.

Kendrick Mountain (or Kendrick Peak) is characterized by various zones of vegetation, ranging from coniferous forests, to aspen stands, to high mountain meadow grasslands. Unusual combinations of trees can be found growing close to the summit, such as Colorado pinyon (Pinus edulis) alongside Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and limber pine (Pinus flexilis).

A note and a warning: there is no source of water along these trails so hikers should be well prepared with plenty of water and in good physical condition. Before you go, consult the US Forest Service's Kaibab National Forest pages about Kendrick and other nearby hiking trails:
