Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Presents Autumn Gala
In Sedona, Arizona Turquoise Tortoise Gallery kicks off the 2017 Autumn Season with a grand Gala Celebration, October 6th, from 5-8 pm, to officially introduce the gallery’s exciting new owners, Thomas and Jennifer Bryant Nagel. Live music, refreshments, visiting artists and a Trunk Show add to the excitement of the evening as the gallery welcomes Navajo artist Redwing Nez and presents a jewelry Trunk Show by Mummy’s Bundle.
Mummy’s Bundle is the distinctive collection of wearable art jewelry inspired by archaeological, historical and cultural elements of ancient Native American cultures in the Southwest. Doug Hancock (1941-2017), an archeologist who founded Mummy’s Bundle with his wife Mary, had noted that, “The canyon walls and caves of the Southwest are filled with the substance and spirit we try to convey in much of our work.” Mary Hancock is the gifted designer whose imagination was sparked by Doug’s background and she continues to create the exceptional necklaces, collars, bracelets and earrings collectors of Mummy’s Bundle count on.
An extensive collection of Mummy’s Bundle wearable art jewelry will be available during this 1st Friday exhibition opening.
Native American artist Redwing Nez will also be in attendance at Turquoise Tortoise Gallery to meet visitors and talk about his dynamic contemporary paintings that reflect his Diné (Navajo) heritage. His imagery includes symbols such as birds and corn stalks, symbols of the four seasons, rainbows and lightening. In his visually striking canvases cornstalks frequently play a central role. “We worship white corn,” Redwing Nez explains, “morning corn, the corn of life. It’s a prayer, a chant.” Trained as a traditional sand painter, Nez has also become known for his murals and illustrations. For the 2012 State of Arizona Centennial, Redwing Nez was commissioned to paint the 60-foot long mural that now graces the wall along Centennial Walkway facing Flagstaff’s historic train station, below Route 66, where the Flagstaff Visitor Center is located.
At least half a dozen new paintings by Redwing Nez will be unveiled at the Gala.
Mark your calendars and stop by Turquoise Tortoise Gallery on 1st Friday evening to be part of this exciting gala celebration, and meet Redwing Nez and the talent behind Mummy’s Bundle. Exhibition through October 15.
