Sedona, Arizona, Community Animated by the Arts, Now With City Council Meeting Animated by the Arts

Cellist Dianne Springfield performs for the City of Sedona.

Once a month, the public is treated to an “Art Moment” at the beginning of the Council meeting. This innovative idea is very unique; few if any other communities around the country do anything that can compare.

The idea was the brainchild of Mayor Sandy Moriarty and Councilor Jessica Williamson as another way to demonstrate the City’s commitment to the Arts in Sedona. In the past, members of the Sedona arts community have criticized Sedona officials for not doing enough to promote the arts. Sedona has long been known as a “Community Animated by the Arts.”

Nancy Lattanzi, the City of Sedona Arts & Culture Coordinator, is responsible for lining up the artists. As the program grows, Lattanzi plans on reaching out to a wider range of community artists including visual artists, poets, writers, musicians, dancers, actors and singers.
On this evening, cellist Dianne Springfield entertained the audience with her performance. Springfield, an accomplished cellist, performs with the Verde Valley Sinfonietta, teaches private cello lessons and has played the cello for over 30 years. Dianne studied at the University of Southern California School of Music and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Art Moment started on April 14 with a performance presented by Louis Landon, a Steinway pianist. Landon has performed around the world and has written music for film, video and commercials. In May, Solomon and Theresa Morris, who perform spiritual, jazz, blues, R&B and pop music, entertained at the meeting. Solomon played guitar while Theresa accompanied him with a song. In June, the talented trio, “Purpose and the Plan,” consisting of Kelly Cole, Jason Vargo and Eva George, performed their tranquil rendition of “You’re With Me.”
Chris Spheeris presented the Art Moment for July. Chris is an internationally renowned recording artist, Emmy award winning film composer, performer, and writer who has earned platinum and gold records for his instrumental works. Spheeris entertained the audience with singing and dancing to “The Dancer Inside of You.”

The Art Moment occurs on the second Tuesday of every month at 4:30 pm in the Council Chambers.
