Ten thousand years ago the Sedona area was inhabited by hunter-gatherers who survived by moving here and there, surveying the landscape for food, clothing and shelter. Today, a different tribe from all over the world engages in the no less exhilarating pursuits of hunting for the perfect piece of handcrafted jewelry, and gathering collections of unique art, clothing, housewares and more throughout Sedona’s famous shops and galleries. Shopping in Sedona is an experience full of unexpected finds, must-haves and an overwhelming selection of items you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
While fun little boutiques and mom-and-pop shops can be found everywhere from the Village of Oak Creek to the hillsides of Jerome, Sedona is essentially divided into several shopping “districts,” each with its own distinct flavor. The best-known is Tlaquepaque, an arts and crafts village designed in the 1970s to emulate a traditional Mexican village of the same name. 40 specialty shops and galleries populate its shady cobblestone courtyards, along with several restaurants ranging from pub-style to fine dining. Books, designer clothing, jewelry, fine art, even custom-made watches can be found in this enchanting little “village” right on the banks of Oak Creek.
Hillside Sedona, just across 89A from Tlaquepaque, is a more modern cluster of boutiques and galleries that have been elegantly nestled into the red rock foothills with lovely water features and lots of places to sit back and enjoy the view in between indulgences. Artistic clothing, several fine art galleries of varying styles and two of Sedona’s favorite restaurants make up Hillside’s casual but sumptuous environment.
The Shops at Pinon Pointe hover on a red rock hillside above the intersection of 89A and Highway 179, also known as “the Y.” This relatively new installation of shoe, clothing and beauty boutiques, coffee shops, galleries and more has instantly charmed Sedona shoppers with its great mix of locally-owned and high-end national retailers, and its astounding views.
Then of course, there’s Uptown Sedona, where you can find everything from aura photography services to prickly pear candy in a lively setting reminiscent in places of an old-west main street, with jaw dropping red rock vistas every where you turn. Turquoise jewelry, Native American art and high-end western wear are a few of Uptown’s specialties, right alongside cute Sedona tochkes for your jealous friends back home.
The great shopping doesn’t end at the Sedona city limits. The adjacent Village of Oak Creek is a great place to go antique hunting, and also boasts a sizeable outlet mall packed with bargains. Clarkdale and Cottonwood are both rich in antique shops, unusual bookstores and galleries featuring local art and crafts. Jerome is a shopping haven with everything from knitting supplies to pottery to locally-made jewelry, all tucked into storefronts that once serviced the biggest mining operation in the state.
The shopping fun in Sedona is only limited by your schedule and budget so try to make a little room in both to take advantage of all there is.
And if you're not planning to visit Sedona anytime soon, but would love to capture a little piece of red rock country for yourself or a friend, you can:
