Sedona, AZ: Gateway To Sedona was "Born on the Fourth of July," launched July 4, 2002, with the goal to be a successful online magazine and directory showcasing Sedona, Arizona, in "photo-essay style."
At that time, the publishers thought an online magazine format that could really share the beauty of Sedona in pictures was badly needed, and would help surfers browsing the World Wide Web to know more about red rock country.
Most people were on "dial-up" connections in 2002, with small computer monitors, so the challenge was to deliver lots of oversized photos that would load fast and look great. Every file size was made as small as possible without sacrificing quality, to ensure a good online experience from any computer.
The first versions of Gateway To Sedona featured various-sized rectangular sections, modeling after some popular print magazines, and the big "GS" was inspired by the big "O" from
Oprah Magazine. It was fun for the publishers to see the old Gateway To Sedona while searching the "Wayback Machine," an archive of websites from years ago.
