"En plein air," French for "in the open air," is a spontaneous art form whereby artists paint landscapes outdoors, or in the open air, responding to the immediacy of the moment and reflecting the changing light, weather conditions, and deepening shadows. In addition to being a proud Festival sponsor, the newly enhanced L’Auberge de Sedona also offers the perfect setting for this type of artwork.
Thirty-two of the finest plein air artists from across the country will capture on canvas the retreat’s beauty, including the newly redesigned creekside cottages and L’Auberge Restaurant on Oak Creek, which is renowned for its romantic charm and delectable cuisine.
The nine-day Plein Air Festival is Sedona Arts Center’s signature event and features daily public activities, such as the “Paint Out on Main Street” on October 24. Other complimentary Plein Air Festival events are held throughout the week. The weekend festivities at L’Auberge de Sedona begin with a two-hour “Quick Draw” on Friday, October 30, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The “Quick Draw” event is open for public viewing. During this time, the artists set up at various locations throughout the property and have only two hours to capture the splendor of the creekside retreat in their masterpieces. This is an exciting and intense part of the Festival, as artists potentially meet a variety of challenges associated with painting in the outdoors.
