Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Showcases Earth and Fire in Sedona Arizona

Red Deer Design By Mariann Leahy Showcased At Turquoise Tortoise Gallery In Sedona Arizona
Red Deer by Mariann Leahy.

Sedona, AZ: In “Earth & Fire” Turquoise Tortoise Gallery celebrates art borne from these two most primal of elements.  For its “1st Friday Gallery Tour” exhibition on July 3rd, from 5-8 pm, the gallery hosts local artist Mariann Leahy who will welcome visitors and answer questions about the Native American-inspired clay ceramic pieces she creates.  The show also puts the spotlight on kiln-fired glass horse sculptures by artist Newy Fagan.

“We live in an area where nature is such a strong force,” points out Gallery Director Patricia Knight,
“so it’s natural for us to recognize the enormous role core elements like earth and fire have played in creating art since art has been created.”  It’s equally interesting to see how contemporary artists continue to be drawn back to these basics of creation.

As the southwest continued to lure her back from frequent travels, the tactile draw of clay began.  Leahy received a scholarship for graduate work to study ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago and, new-found skills in hand, relocated to Arizona.  Her singular style, exhibited in wall hangings, bowls and more, combines a love of painting and of clay with her respect and understanding of Native American traditions, symbols and designs.
