Sedona, AZ: The continued legacy of Sedona’s Open Studios event will continue Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3.  The weekend will kick-off with double celebration receptions at Sedona Arts Center and Kinion Fine Art, both on May 1, from 5 – 8 p.m., as part of the “1st Friday” events.  This is a once-a-year opportunity to peek into the private art studios of some of the areas most exciting artists. The Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition event is sponsored by the City of Sedona Arts & Culture Commission and the Sedona Chamber of Commerce.

The history of Sedona’s artists inviting the public into their creation spaces began back in the 1970s and 80s, when a group got together and began to organize.  First they created a tour guide publication and soon it became a regular monthly event.  Members of this original group still reside and create art in the area including Joella Jean Mahoney and Bill Gunning.

Gunning explained the event “was a way to meet other like-minded artists who understood that words were not merely enough to communicate ideas and feelings.”

The history continues this year with nearly 30 participating studios – many innovative, award winning, and collected artists are throwing open the doors to guests who will visit from all over the country. Sedona has become known for its creative community and the inspiring visions of residents.  Artists who view the natural beauty of our landscape as a catalyst to express themselves are a very special breed.
