Artist James Gill shot to fame in the 1960s alongside such noted artists as Roy Lichtenstein, Edward Hopper and Andy Warhol, helping to bring the term "Pop Art" into our lexicon.
Today, after decades of self-exile, the celebrated painter is back and being honored with major exhibitions across the country, including a two-night event, February 20 & 21, 5-9 p.m., at Scottsdale, Arizona's Cattle Track Arts Compound, located one block east of Scottsdale Road and MacDonald at 6105 N. Cattle Track Road.

Hosted by Sedona's Lanning Gallery, a 22-year-old classic and contemporary fine art gallery that represents the artist, the weekend event will also feature a Sunday "Coffee with the Artist" on February 22, 9-10:30 a.m. at the Hotel Valley Ho Ballroom, 6850 E. Main Street, Scottsdale.

James Gill's rapid rise to fame followed his first paintings of Marilyn Monroe, a triptych completed just weeks after her death. Almost overnight they appeared in the pages of LIFE magazine and were added to the collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. The Whitney Museum, the Smithsonian Institute and other major museums soon followed suit. To critics Gill was "an incisive and startling commentator" [Los Angeles Times] who was able to find the psychological reality that lay beneath surface artificiality.

The artist was chosen to be part of the internationally prestigious exhibition Sao Paulo 9, Environment U.S.A.: 1957-1967 where he and his now famous peers took the art world by storm.  Gill was tapped to paint a portrait of author and Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn for the cover of TIME. As a Los Angeles-based artist, Gill ran with a fast crowd of celebrities and became known for painting the cultural and political figures of the day.  But an interesting thing happened at the height of Gill's success: he walked away.

"I came to a conclusion," Gill explains, "all these people that I was meeting that were rich and famous were not happy." There were very few happy artists Gill observed. "It's not the fame that makes you happy; it's not the money that makes you happy. It's just being in tune with your life, whatever you're doing."

The artist retreated into a self-imposed exile for decades, living in a remote rural town in the Northwest and raising a family. It is only recent that Gill has emerged.  With a renewed artistic vision and exciting techniques that allow him to combine modern technologies with his still-Contemporary vision, Gill is once again attracting international attention.
