Sedona, AZ: Visitors to Sedona are fortunate to experience red rock country during the summer monsoons. Some of the most enduring and classic images of Arizona are taken during the rainy season.

One of the most commanding views of the red rocks regardless of the weather can be found from the mesa-top home of the Sedona Airport. America’s most scenic airport, it's one of the best places in Sedona to encounter a spectacular monsoon.  When the rain recedes, sunlight streaks luminously through the clouds in unbelievable arrays of light and shadow and color—and amazingly beautiful rainbows, as can be seen in these photographs.

The storms can be terrifyingly violent as a darkening cloud spreads out from canyon wall to valley floor, thunder rolls across the sky, and the rain falls heavy and relentlessly. Lightening splinters and cracks, often so alarmingly close to the ground the seasoned resident can be unnerved.  

These torrential downfalls send folks scurrying to the closest cover and, for the most part, are short lived. But it’s a good idea to keep the camera close for that once-in-a-lifetime photographic moment.
