Lanning Gallery Plays Important Role in Reemergence of James Gill in Sedona Arizona

Marilyn Monroe Color Study By James Gill
Marilyn Monroe Color Study by James Gill.

Sedona, AZ: Pop Artist James Gill rose to fame in the 1960s, was routinely exhibited alongside artists such as Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol; major museums such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian Institute added his works to their collections.  Then James Gill disappeared – becoming a legend in the Pop Art world.

His celebrity-filled lifestyle had become too much and Gill retreated to an artist’s compound deep in the woods of the California/Oregon border.  Thirty-five years later he reemerged with a renewed spirit and focus, exciting new techniques and work as spirited and cutting edge as ever.  Major shows have been launched in several states celebrating the return of this legendary artist and in Arizona, Sedona’s Lanning Gallery – a twenty-two year old gallery of classic and contemporary art – will play an important role in presenting James Gill to today’s art world.

As part of the 1st annual “Red Rock Canvas” city-wide arts and culture event in Sedona, November 7-9, Lanning Gallery will host a Friday evening artist’s reception for James Gill from 5 to 8 p.m.  On Saturday, the gallery hosts an artist’s dialogue/brunch with James Gill from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Both events will be unique opportunities for visitors to interact with the famous, yet remarkably down-to-earth, artist.  On February 20 to 22, of 2009, Lanning Gallery will host a three-day event at the Cattle Track Arts Compound in Scottsdale, Arizona, to further celebrate the reemergence of this important artist.
