Multi-instrumentalist, Ames has been playing violin classically since age ten and since then has adapted other styles, as well as playing one of the many guitars he brings to their performances. Not satisfied with the limitations of a 4-string violin, Ames undertook the training to become a luthier and built and designed his own 6-string violyra. Adding two lower strings enables Ames to bring the viola and cello tones to their music. Rich and evocative, the violyra not only warms the tonal palette but also provides Ames with a means to play percussive, walking bass lines, and contrapuntal accompaniment.
Individually they have performed at Avery Fisher and Carnegie Halls, toured and performed with symphonies, opera orchestras, chamber ensembles, jazz groups, and with harpist Ani Williams, Klezmer legend Schlomo Carlbach, R. Carlos Nakai, the William Eaton Ensemble, Nuance and Mosaico Flamenco.
LYRA has recorded four albums and continues to search for interesting music to include in their upcoming releases. With the addition of the very versatile Douglas as the rhythm man, the concert will prove to be a true musical potpourri, as sample concert selections will include original works and such covers as “Emily,” “Minor Swing,” and “Here Comes the Sun.”
Tickets will be available at the door for $15 general admission, and $12 for Friends of the Library members. Children 18 years and under are encouraged to come for free. The Sedona Library is located at 3250 White Bear Road, just off Dry Creek Road and Hwy 89A.
