Sedona Arizona Roadside Attractions: Grand Falls on the Little Colorado

Grand Falls On The Little Colorado River Near Sedona Arizona

Sedona, AZ: The thunderous roar of water unseen from the dirt road approaching Grand Falls is extraordinary. The tiniest trickle of water in arid landscapes such as the Painted Desert is distinctive. The sound of flowing water, thousands of cubic feet per second, is downright bizarre.

The Grand Falls on the Little Colorado River are often described as being “out in the middle of nowhere.” Invariably there are comparisons made to chocolate. And typically, someone will mention the Grand Falls of Arizona are higher than the far more famous Niagara Falls in New York State.

The Little Colorado River doesn’t run at all
a few months out of the year, appears as periodic patches of wet sand at other times, and is often reduced to a thin thread of water in the expanse of the barren river bottom.

That is, until the snow melts in the spring or it rains in the summer.
Then the Grand Falls are at their grandest and the water cascades down the falls like a swirling, million-gallon chocolate Yoo-hoo.  Mud and silt collects in the river, giving the water an uncharacteristic texture.
