Discover the Two-Tailed Swallowtail Butterfly in Sedona Arizona

Two-tailed Swallowtail Butterfly In Sedona Arizona

Sedona, AZ:  Who can come upon a butterfly and not pause and take notice of its frolicking “busy-ness” and delicate beauty?  Butterflies lift our spirits, inviting us to enjoy the moment.  Perhaps it is their transformative nature that brings out our own sense of joy and creativity.

This beauty – a two-tailed swallowtail butterfly – was found nectaring on pink penstemon,
only mildly disturbed by the intrusion of the camera lens.

Primarily yellow with black “tiger striping” on its wings, the two-tailed swallowtail butterfly is large, as butterflies go, growing up to three to five inches.  The blue “eyespots” on the tails are believed to fool predators into attacking the hind end as opposed to the head of the butterfly.

Two-tailed swallowtail butterflies like the foothills and canyons and since they are active most of the year, be sure to keep an eye out on hikes in and around Sedona and the Verde Valley.

Oh, and by the way, the two-tailed swallowtail butterfly just happens to be the Arizona State butterfly!

Other Arizona Nature Facts:
The state tree is the palo verde. The state flower is the saguaro cactus flower.  And the state bird is the cactus wren.
