Sedona, AZ: Summer means weekend barbecues, pool parties and of course with the kids out of school, family vacations. This year give them an exciting answer to the question, “What did you do over summer vacation?” Take them to Arizona’s Red Rock Country in Sedona — recently named one of the top five destinations in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.
First find a family friendly place to stay. Sedona has a wide variety of accommodations that will fit almost any family’s wants and budget, from affordable hotels to upscale resorts. And yes, they are all ready to host families.
For example the Sedona Summit Resort is a great place for families and it’s affordable. Located in the heart of west Sedona, the Sedona Summit Resort is adjacent to National Forest Service land and offers panoramic red rock views. The resort offers a pool, kiddie’s pool, hot tub, game room, fitness equipment, activities, barbeque areas and personal Concierge service. A one bedroom suite will comfortably sleep a family of four and features a fireplace, private balcony, fully-equipped kitchen and a washer/dryer.

Now, what to do? Sedona is known for its great hiking and mountain biking. There are trails for every skill level and bike rentals are available by the day. Or take them to a “natural” water slide at Slide Rock State Park located on Oak Creek. Slide Rock is a red rock formation that is not only beautiful, but also works as a red rock water slide. While in the Oak Creek area, take the kids fishing, swimming or simply enjoy the natural beauty.
Speaking of natural beauty, the Grand Canyon is just a few hours from Sedona and makes the perfect day trip. Drive or catch the Grand Canyon Railway. An authentic steam engine train, the railway takes out from Williams to the Grand Canyon and back. The trip itself is filled with great scenery.
How about going back in time? Cowboy cook-outs give families a taste of the Wild West. Start with a horseback ride to the campsite. Once there enjoy a traditional cowboy dinner, wagon rides and live music. Or get in a jeep. A jeep tour is one of the best ways to get off-road and up close and personal with those famous red rock formations.
Finally, take an early morning hot air balloon ride. Watch the sunrise above the red rock vistas, then get treated to champagne and breakfast once back on land.
So, escape the ordinary family getaway. Take a trip to Sedona and really give the kids something to write about!
