Sedona, AZ: Three lectures, student artwork, jazz music and performances by Dragon Knights Stilt Theater highlight an amazing weekend of activities for Tlaquepaque’s second annual State of the Art on Friday, September 28, to Sunday, September 30.
Friday and Saturday evenings, September 28 and 29, also will feature ten of Tlaquepaque's finest galleries and their artists framed by the unmatched ambiance of Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village itself. The Dragon Knights Stilt Theater, an interactive theater experience which combines puppets with stilt walking to bring the magic and mystery of fairy tales to life, will perform on Friday and Saturday, September 28 and 29, at 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, September 30, at Noon.
Saturday also will feature three outstanding presentations, beginning at 11:00 a.m. with "The Art of Collecting" by Michael Quick, the former Curator of American Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Artist David Filtner will talk about "Red Rock Fever" at 12:30 p.m., detailing how to take concept, design and color of Sedona’s actual visual reality and express an emotional response in painting. At 2:00 p.m., Lita Albuquerque, a visionary and internationally acclaimed installation artist, will speak on "Stellar Axis: Antarctica," a star alignment on the ice at both the North and South Poles.
The second annual event, occurring in conjunction with Sedona's Jazz on the Rocks festival, will also have jazz musicians performing throughout Tlaquepaque during the evening hours. Other activities highlighting a variety of interests to please every art palate will include an art walk through various Tlaquepaque galleries, the return of the Dragon Knights Stilt Theater, artist and student artist demonstrations, and art seminars.
"This special affair is for both the new and the seasoned art collector," says Wendy Lippman, Tlaquepaque General Manager and Resident Partner. "State of the Art is all about the art galleries at Tlaquepaque, artist demonstrations and the wide range of art available for collecting and enjoying."
A new addition to this year's event is the promotion of Youth and Art. Five students from Sedona Red Rock High School will show a piece of art in a gallery during the weekend event. Two scholarships will be awarded and the public is encouraged to provide input on which student art piece they most favor. That will determine one of the scholarship winners, and Quick will select which student is to receive the other scholarship. Event sponsor, Southwest Art Magazine has donated $500 towards the student scholarship. The scholarship winners will be announced on Saturday, September 29, at 6:30 p.m., at El Prado Gallery.
All the presentations will occur in the La Sala de los Milagros (Room of Miracles). The jazz performances will include the Ken Aurich Trio: Ken Aurich – Guitar, Steve Douglas – Bass, and Larry Czarnecki – drums; Jazz a la Mode: Rosemary Chavez – Vocals, Jack Peterson – Guitar, Tom Winker – Bass, Frankie Chavez – Drums; and Janice Paul Duo: Janice Paul – piano, Ray Carter – bass.
