Turquoise Tortoise Gallery In Sedona Arizona Celebrates Contemporary Navajo Artist Peterson Yazzie

Peterson Yazzie Painting Moon Horizon At Turquoise Tortoise Gallery In Sedona Arizona

Sedona, AZ: For over thirty-six years the Turquoise Tortoise Gallery in Sedona, Arizona, has been renowned for its collection of Native American art. This month it celebrates one of the newer artists to the gallery: Peterson Yazzie. On Friday, October 5th, from 5-8 p.m. the art gallery presents "Hidden Spirits," a reception to celebrate the award-winning young artist's contemporary paintings. The show will continue through October 14th.

Yazzie is Dineh (Navajo) of the Mexican Clan,
One Who Walks Around Clan, Red House, and Coyote Pass Clan. Yazzie's talent had the great good fortune to be nurtured early: While growing up in rural Greasewood Springs, Arizona, where he rode sixteen miles to school on a washboard road, his teacher in junior high was a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and the Rhode Island School of Design. This well-schooled instructor became Yazzie's first mentor, introducing him to the value of education and recognizing in his student a talent worth nurturing. Given the cost of college, Yazzie had no plans to further his education; but his teacher stepped in to help the budding artist obtain a wealth of scholarships. This led, as Yazzie's skills progressed, to his being granted an abundance of prestigious awards and fellowships.
