Lowell Observatory


View the heavens through Percival Lowell's 24" Alvan Clark refractor.

Flagstaff, Arizona: Astronomy enthusiasts must check out the Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill in Flagstaff. Here, you can gaze into the unbelievably starry night sky through the late 19th-century Clark Telescope, which was used by Air Force and Apollo astronauts to plan moon landings.

At Lowell Observatory, you'll find guided daytime tours and nighttime telescope viewing, shows in the new McAllister Space Theatre and the Giclas Lecture Hall, and shopping in northern Arizona's finest astronomy-related gift shop. In addition, you can visit the historic Slipher Building Rotunda Museum, named after an astronomer at Lowell whose research was later used in development of the Big Bang theory of the expanding universe.

Lowell Observatory is also famous for the discovery of Pluto in 1930. The Observatory looks to the future with the development of the state-of-the-art Discovery Channel Telescope, due for completion in 2010.
