Sedona Hiking & Trails

Soldier's Pass area in Sedona Arizona

In this article about Sedona hiking, we cover just some of the  trails in Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon
. Please visit or call the US Forest Service Visitor Center at 928-284-5324 for complete information on hiking in Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon before departure.

Find out about the difficulty level and the approximate time required for Sedona hiking, and be sure to have your Red Rock Pass (available at many locations around town) when
parking at the trailhead, or in the Coconino National Forest. It's essential to take plenty of water and always a good idea to bring a buddy along with you on the hike!

SOLDIERS PASS HIKE

Take Soldier's Pass Road from Hwy 89A to Rim Shadows Drive. Turn right - continue to Canyon Shadows Drive. Follow this road just a short distance to a sign marking access to the national forest. Turn left into the parking area. Highlights are the "Seven Sacred Pools" and the Devil's Kitchen Sinkhole.

SNOOPY ROCK HIKE

Snoopy Rock is located near uptown near where Hwy 179 meets Schnebly Hill Road. Take Schnebly Hill Road and go a short distance past where the pavement ends.

WILSON CANYON HIKE

Park at Midgley Bridge (that crosses Oak Creek) and look for the plaque showing the Wilson Mountain National Recreation Area. There are two trailhead signs at this site - WILSON CAN TR #49 and WILSON MTN TR #10. Stay left to avoid climbing to the top of Wilson Mountain (7,000 feet elevation!).

Javelinas, also known as Collared Peccaries, in Sedona Arizona

Small herds of javelinas (pronounced "Hava-lina") are a common sight in Sedona, although visitors rarely see them because they come out to feed after dark, especially to resident's gardens, where they love to eat everything accessible in a vegetable or flower garden. (Even our cherry tomato plants were eaten right to the ground, green parts and all!).

The Javalina is actually the Collared Peccary, with it's major range in Central and South America. It is not directly related to the Old-World pigs of Europe, but it is very similar...and very intelligent as well.
