Jerome Art Walk celebrates the Fourth of July in artistic style as galleries and studios open the doors for an evening of summertime enchantment. From the lively Old Jerome High School to new gallery JoojArt on the Clark Street upper level, delightful surprises abound in this artist colony high on Cleopatra Hill.

Restaurants will be offering delicious fare and the charming hotels and B&B’s will be welcoming visitors on this holiday weekend. Cool evenings at this mile high community beckon guests from the steamy Arizona valleys and lovely art is as much a draw as the respite from the heat. The town shuttle offers free transportation all evening so be prepared to park and let someone else do the driving if you choose not to walk.
With thirty galleries and studios all open in this magical town, one of a kind art is everywhere. Festivities begin at 5 p.m., with doors open until at least 8 p.m. A sampling of what is in store for the art lover follows.
Purple Sky Photography in the Old Jerome High School presents a new show, “Waves of Stone,” featuring photography from Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon located on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. Kim has visited this fascinating area numerous times to capture the undulating waves of sandstone walls that were carved by flowing water and winds over thousands of years. The mysterious slot canyons become even more magical during summer months when fleeting beams of light dance through the canyons.
In Building B next door, Sally Murphy and Darryl Day present new delights. Lovely little pastels by Derryl Day grace the walls and new pieces by Sally Murphy can be seen at Day Art Studio. Please stop by and see the ever-changing work!
Pura Vida Gallery celebrates the July 4th Jerome Art Walk with new summer styles by several of its fiber artists. Maura Cronin and Abbie Chambers debut a new line of their cap sleeve tops, now hand-made of bamboo fiber. Their exciting colors for the summer are purple, turquoise and orange. In addition, new fiber artist Debra Street debuts her burn out silk/rayon ponchos - a perfect cover-up for the desert evenings. Join Pura Vida for chocolates and champagne on the evening of the Art Walk.
Raku Gallery is excited to have emerging artist Sue Savage’s one-of-a-kind jewelry. Inspired by nature’s colors, textures, and patterns, Sue uses polymer and incorporates natural stones, pearls, hand-made elements, and fine quality metals. The glass selection continues to grow with new playful paperweights topped with a snail or frog. For those seeking function in their art the gallery features new beautiful glass hummingbird feeders by Arizona artist Bandhu. Tracy Weisel will be blowing glass for part of the evening so come and join the celebration of Independence Day!
Stop by the Merchants Gathering to say hello to Cody Delong and Tracy and Eric Kee in their new digs. This interesting space is two doors down from Raku Gallery.
At the New State Motor Company photographer Patrick Lincoln offers up his monthly happening and this missive. “As the racehorse of creativity pounds down the slippery slope of entropy, heading for the summer straightaway of profitability, the Lincoln Gallery remains a bastion of beauty on the shores of the sea of chaos, ripping piece after piece of art from the awful emptiness of the abyss. Yes, it is a mind bending labor of love and we do it all for you and because we are totally unsuited for any other form of endeavor. But never mind all that! Instead, feast your eyes on this latest labor of love and let it strengthen you in your own personal struggle against the harsh slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Looking for a good time? Come on down and see me sometime.”
Julie Christensen will open her new gallery in Jerome at this month’s first Saturday Art Walk. Her gallery called JoojArt is a quaint artist-owned space nestled back in a courtyard of the Jerome Center on Clark Street. Stop by and share the magic with Jooj as she creates art using such mediums as burlap, plaster, paint, and stained glass. View her works in progress, as well as her finished pieces, which she describes simply as "feelism.”
Gallery 527 hosts “The Stain of Politics 2" for the second year. This show by gallery members will be a provocative comment on our times and the issues at hand. Gallery intern Joe Ward will be once again included in the show and new member Mary Fisher will be making her first appearance at this yearly event. Music by Dave Rentz is the perfect compliment to the interesting work.
Next door, Spirit Art Gallery celebrates owner Rosemarie Shemaitis’s 3 years of life and business in Jerome with a group show featuring sundials by Leo Shakespeare.
