Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Showcases Earth and Fire
In “Earth & Fire” Turquoise Tortoise Gallery celebrates art borne from these two most primal of elements. For its “1st Friday Gallery Tour” exhibition on July 3rd, from 5-8 pm, the gallery hosts local artist Mariann Leahy who will welcome visitors and answer questions about the Native American-inspired clay ceramic pieces she creates. The show also puts the spotlight on kiln-fired glass horse sculptures by artist Newy Fagan.
“We live in an area where nature is such a strong force,” points out Gallery Director Patricia Knight, “so it’s natural for us to recognize the enormous role core elements like earth and fire have played in creating art since art has been created.” It’s equally interesting to see how contemporary artists continue to be drawn back to these basics of creation.
“Clay, coming from the earth, provides for me a natural tactile connection with our fragile world,” Leahy has written. Leahy began with a focus on drawing and painting, working as an art teacher in the multicultural Chicago area for over fifteen years. As the southwest continued to lure her back from frequent travels, the tactile draw of clay began. Leahy received a scholarship for graduate work to study ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago and, new-found skills in hand, relocated to Arizona. Her singular style, exhibited in wall hangings, bowls and more, combines a love of painting and of clay with her respect and understanding of Native American traditions, symbols and designs.
Fagan has pioneered a rediscovery of the most ancient glass process in the contemporary kiln-formed glass movement. Over twenty years ago Fagan began her series of signed and numbered horses which has been a favorite with collectors since. Each kiln-formed glass horse and pony requires fusing at temperatures exceeding 1450 degrees allowing, at full fuse, the various layers of brilliantly colored glass to melt into one thickness. Incredibly quick and skillful procedures follow. Fagan’s glass works have been exhibited across the country and awards and honors have been a constant in this gifted artist’s career.
The gallery is open daily 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sundays. For further information, visit Turquoise Tortoise Gallery at Sedona’s Hozho Center, or call 928-282-2262, email mail@turqtortsedona.com and visit www.turqtortsedona.com.
