Sedona’s Lanning Gallery celebrates three artists whose work is new to the gallery in an exhibition entitled “Introducing…,” featuring the cast-bronze sculptures of Howard Hitchcock, the meticulous abstract paintings of Richard Bruland, and the equine paintings of Kathleen Kinkopf. The works of the three artists will be featured throughout May.
For more than a generation, Howard Hitchcock has been a sculptor and university professor of art, devoting decades to perfecting the art of ceramic shell casting. As the artist noted in the preface to his instructional book, Out of the Fiery Furnace, “Ceramic shell casting is the most spectacular art process imaginable, particularly at the crescendo of a night pour when the glowing, golden stream of liquid bronze flows into the red-hot shell, bringing it to neon incandescence in the dark.” In Hitchcock’s bronze sculptures stylized human forms blend into the structure of objects both imagined and ordinary as the artist infuses a sophisticated sense of humor into each piece, challenging viewers to work out its cleverness.
Richard Bruland paints and sands layers of acrylic on panel in extraordinarily meticulous abstracts that defy imagination. By eliminating the specific in these paintings, that he refers to in landscape terms, Bruland strives to draw people in. A focus on the transition from light to dark, inferring his sense of place, allows the artist to suggest atmosphere, light, color and shadow, elements of nature that people everywhere experience. By eliminating the specific, Bruland’s paintings can help re-connect the viewer to their own memories, experiences and emotions.
Kathleen Kinkopf uses mixed media and acrylics to paint the beauty and spirit of horses in a Realist style, often within Surrealist compositions. “I grew up with these majestic creatures, feeding, grooming, riding and showing them,” Kinkopf explains. “One of my greatest inspirations for a heightened energy flow within me, and in my surroundings, is my relationship with horses,” Kinkopf says. “The impression of their incredible mass, sensuous grace and spirit - spoken with endearing eyes - is unforgettable.”
