Tlaquepaque Features Jazz and Blues Performances during May
Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village is the perfect place to shop, enjoy fabulous dining, and during the month of May, hear fantastic music throughout the village. Celebrate “May is Magic” at Tlaquepaque with some of the best jazz, blues, and funk around with seven distinct musical events to choose from.
Kicking off the month is singer Susannah Martin performing Friday, May 1, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Las Campanas. This event also coincides with First Friday at the Galleries. Martin is described as “…the consummate performer, as talented as she is beautiful. She brings class and polish to any stage. A true delight to behold,” from the Tucson Jazz Society.
Hailing from the West Coast where her 20-year career was launched, Martin has sung with big bands, jazz combos, Latin jazz, avante garde and a capella groups, as well as Motown, classic rock and Top 40 and R&B funk bands. Now based in Sedona, Susannah performs throughout the region at concerts, clubs, and private events. Her liquid velvet voice is entrancing. Martin will also perform with jazz musician Steve Sander, Saturday, May 9, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Patio del Norte.
“Surprisingly unexpected,” and “an off-kilter jazz/fusion trio, focused not only on playing music, but getting back to ‘playing with music’,” probably best describes the Busker Eaton Jazz Trio. Catch them performing Sunday, May 3, 2 to 4 p.m., at Las Campanas. Listen for the Trio’s whimsical and moody compositions using such unlikely instruments as the slide whistle, melodica and more. Bring the whole family. The Jazz Trio will play a second gig on Sunday, May 24, 1 to 3 p.m., at Patio del Norte.
On Sunday afternoon May 10, from 1 to 3 p.m., in Las Campanas courtyard the Jackson Jones Jazz Trio will delight audiences with original eclectic jazz compositions and familiar pieces from recognizable jazz greats. Describing themselves as a “…combination of mainstream jazz, free improvisation, and original music ranging from sultry Latin tunes to mind-bending rhythmic explorations,” experience this highly popular jazz ensemble from Prescott.
If you like the blues delivered with great energy and fun don’t miss Big Daddy D and the Dynamites, a versatile R&B group founded in 1998 and playing all over Arizona. Performing a variety of musical styles—while staying true to the blues framework—they cover B B King, Freddie King, Jimmy Reed, Lil Junior, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, and of course their own original blues music now available on their three CDs. For a foot stomping, hard-not-to-move blues infusion, Big Daddy D and the Dynamites will be performing not once, but twice at Tlaquepaque’s Patio del Norte: Sunday, May 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 23, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Tlaquepaque, known as the Art and Soul of Sedona, is home to over 45 shops, galleries, and restaurants and is a must-see destination for travelers from all over the world. Visit www.tlaq.com, or call (928) 282-4838 for more information.
