Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Features Sculptor Gerry Sutter
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Features Sculptor Gerry Sutter
The Turquoise Tortoise Gallery puts the spotlight squarely on the masterful work of artist Gerry Sutter for its “1st Friday” reception on March 6, from 5-8 p.m. With great skill and inspiration, Sutter has the ability to draw from sections of Tupelo wood life-size ravens that seem destined to fly. A rural upbringing with countless hours spent studying the flora and fauna around him led Sutter to a career in research biology; a chance attendance at a wildlife woodcarving show led him to this next chapter of his life.

“I saw birds there that I thought were real,” Sutter remembers
of the extraordinary examples of woodcarving the show offered. The experience touched an innate gift inside him.  “I’d never carved before but I said to my wife, ‘I think I can carve.’”  And, indeed, he could.  Sutter has been busy ever since carving birds of all kinds, even taking custom orders for everything from hummingbirds to quail – and the extraordinary ravens that have taken up residence at Turquoise Tortoise Gallery.

Primarily self-taught, with countless hours spent studying reference books and practicing,
Sutter loses himself in his work – he spends fifty to seventy-five hours for each one-of-a-kind raven.  Sutter begins each new bird from the base up finding the birch or juniper log it will stand on, then visualizing how the bird would take up residence on the wood.  He sketches the bird onto a large block of Tupelo wood and pulls out his band saw.  After sawing in the bird’s silhouette, leaving plenty of room to work with, Sutter begins the deeply inspired yet labor-intensive process of sanding and carving.  Basic feather patterns are carved in before he uses hot carving tools to finely carve in individual feathers.

Hints of iridescent color are strategically and subtly worked into Sutter’s final coat of acrylic paint, capturing with dead-on accuracy the black that is not truly black on the blackest of ravens.  Every detail of Sutter’s birds that close inspection reveals is spellbinding.
