The First Saturday Jerome Art Walk features 30 exciting galleries and studios throughout the entire town. Many of these spaces are clustered together, making it enjoyable to spend time in each section before moving on to the next. A map is provided to guide you through this exciting venue as well as a free shuttle service. Plenty of parking is available.
Dawn Sutherland will be in her studio in the Old Jerome High School. There is always a painting underway on her easel. This month, spend some time chatting with Dawn about how a painting comes about from the initial idea to the completed painting. Painters who work outdoors have efficient light and innovative equipment that will fit into a backpack. This allows a painter to go far beyond the road and their vehicle to find the best locations to paint. Dawn's "plein air" kit will be set up on display, so visitors can see what is involved in doing a painting outdoors. Come in with questions and enjoy appetizers and wine.
Vicki Day, with her hand- dyed, felted and embellished textiles, has out-done herself with classic clutch-style purses in a myriad of amazing colors. A new line of mirrors, framed in her signature wools and embellished with beadwork is also new this month. Her work can be seen in the studio as well as The Jerome Gallery. Sally Murphy, an oil artist, has several new pieces up for January. Her style is interesting in that she uses only a palette knife or a rag, in colors that infuse a sense of lightness and spirit. Sandy Brown excels at her vintage millinery work as well as hand designed clothing in natural fibers. Her many clients from all over the world will attest to her brilliance at clothing that fits and flatters every figure. They can all be seen at the Old Jerome High School, Building B, in the Day Artist Studio.
The Cody DeLong Studio was alive with lots of guests last month, coming in after the press Cody had just received in the local entertainment magazine, Kudos. Cody sold ¡°Oak Creek Tributary¡± during the evening. Come on in and see what the fuss is all about. Cody will have a new studio painting on the easel, stop in and say hello. You can visit Cody inside The Jerome Gallery, under new ownership and filled with new and lovely work by talented artists. Next door, Raku Gallery is sure to delight with over 300 artists represented and a panoramic view that is extraordinary.
Jerome's jewelry artist Rick Hernandez has been hard at work creating a unique line of custom 14k gold and sterling silver jewelry. Rick will be featuring a fabulous line of Australian Opal inlay jewelry along with Tanzanite, Diamond, Amethyst and various Arizona gemstones. We also have fine art landscape photography by Tom Narwid from Southern Utah to Northern Arizona, as well as scenes from the New England area. R. ¡°Wonderments,¡± the new works by Brice Wood, opens at the Jerome Artists Cooperative Gallery on January 3, and runs through February 18. Founding member Brice Wood¡¯s new work not only kicks off the new year but also the show is something fresh and new from the artist.
Wood¡¯s explains, ¡°This show is a departure for me and the gallery because the pieces are in related groups and the exhibition is more an installation about an idea than a traditional collection.¡± This creative examination of religious symbols explores a fascination with ¡®the cross¡¯ and other related topics.
