Navajo Sculptor Lance Yazzie Featured Artist at Turquoise Tortoise Gallery
The Turquoise Tortoise Gallery welcomes second generation Navajo sculptor Lance Yazzie to showcase his latest traditional and contemporary works throughout December.
Yazzie has been represented by the gallery since he was just sixteen years old; now in his thirties he has garnered the kind of awards and recognition due an artist with an early calling, continued inspiration, and a strong work ethic that allows him to keep evolving. Private commissions of his contemporary pieces keeps Yazzie busy as he develops ideas rooted in his Navajo ancestry that grow into universal designs of significant and thought-provoking work.
Yazzie works with contemporary sleekness when producing his tradition-inspired table-top sized fetishes. This innovative approach allows these sculptures to fit as easily into Southwestern décor as into the most modern of settings. Carved from marble, alabaster, or limestone these fetish sculptures are adorned with large feathers, some in the natural tones of domestic birds and many in the bright colors of exotic tropical breeds – reminiscent of days gone by when trade routes allowed unexpected details to show up in Native American works.
One of these sculptures, a bear carved from sleek Belgian Black Marble is crowned with horizontal feathers reaching 37” across; a stunning representation of Yazzie’s vision. While many of his sculptures are bears rendered in a variety of stones, as of this writing one pure white marble buffalo remains, measuring 16” long by 5” wide with a vertical feather crown reaching 21” high.
