Chi: Art as a Healing Medium
Chi: Art as a Healing Medium
Goldenstein Gallery will be kicking of a distinctive exhibition, "Chi: Art as a Healing Medium" exploring the greater healing impact of fine art on our lives. The exhibition is coupled with presentations by Chinese Zen "Soul" calligrapher, Alok Hsu Kwang-han, and artist, activist and author Mary Fisher. The public is invited to the opening night reception for "Chi" on Friday, November 7, from 5 – 8 p.m., during the First Friday Sedona Gallery Association art walk and kick off for Red Rock Canvas: The Event.

The artists featured are sculptor Kwang-han,Liz Wolf and multi-media artists Sherab Khandro, Fisher and Gloria Rothrock. The artists come from a range of styles yet each has consciously incorporated a "healing intent" into his or her work work. The show is part of the Red Rock Canvas: The Event, presented by the Sedona Gallery Association running November 7, 8, and 9.

Kwang-han is an internationally acclaimed and highly original Zen calligraphic painter from China. His work is a startling new synthesis of the beauty of Chinese calligraphy, the spontaneity of Zen, and the evolution of Western Psychotherapy.

Celebrated bronze sculptor Wolf feels that she channels life into images through her artwork.  Fascinated by the connections between humans, animals, spirituality and the world, her work captures the essence of our innermost yearnings.  Work in this exhibition includes the new release, limited edition bronze "Listening" which depicts a Native American woman raptly attentive to whom she is listening. A monumental sized, limited edition bronze "Dreams in Flight" evokes the sense of calling we often feel in life.

Khandro's deepest wish is to nourish and inspire the hearts and minds of others through her work. She is one of a handful of western artists to receive formal training in bringing forth the traditional Buddhist art in the way it has been done in Tibet for centuries. Using the neo-impressionist style of pointillism in her paintings, tiny dots of color create rich and vibrant imagery. Also a renowned sculptor, Khandro recently debuted a limited edition bronze prayer wheel that was sponsored in part by a grant from the City of Sedona Arts Commission during "Chi."

The Prayer Wheel plays a very important role in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The prayer wheel has been used for over a thousand years by the great Yogis of Tibet, as well as Tibetan people from all various walks of life, to release prayers into the world. The practice of turning the Prayer Wheel, or even wearing or having it in one's home, is said to be of immeasurable benefit for oneself and others.

Fisher is an author, public speaker, artist and a special representative of The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). She works across a wide range of media, from handmade papers, fiber and quilts to sculpture, prints and jewelry. Fisher's art has been exhibited in one-woman and group shows, and is found in distinguished private and public collections throughout the United States and the world.

Multi-media artist Rothrock's need to create and express her passion permeates her life. She sees it as an adventure to be a conduit for Spirit flowing through her heart and hands. Her work celebrates the dance of Spirit, nature, and humanity. A particularly poignant subject has been her version of a female icon. The icons depict multi-cultural, mixed ethnic women who are meditating. She aptly calls this series the Serenity Sisters.

To compliment this exhibition Goldenstein Gallery is hosting a series of free talks by "People Who Have Changed the World."  On Friday November 14, at 6 p.m., Mary Fisher will give her talk "From the Heart."

A strong fine art presence in Sedona, Goldenstein Gallery
has been exhibiting internationally recognized local and regional artists from many traditions for years.  The Second Annual Chi: Art as a Healing Medium will run concurrently with Goldenstein’s Fourth Annual "Cowboy's and Indians" show, their acclaimed quintessential Western & Native American Art Exhibition.
