50 Years of the Sedona Arts Center - The Building of an Arts Community Exhibit
The Sedona Heritage Museum is hosting a special temporary exhibit that honors 50 Years of the Sedona Arts Center - The Building of an Arts Community. The display is a cooperative effort between the Museum and the Sedona Arts Center (SAC).
The exhibit will feature the story of SAC’s founding and its 50 years of arts education; artwork by founder Nassan Gobran and by some of SAC’s earliest students - local pioneer artists; and also highlights of special SAC programs of the past, such as the days of its theater, the “Living Art” programs of the 1960s, and its relationship with the community as a gathering place for all kinds of entertainment.
Inspired by the natural beauty of Sedona, Egyptian sculptor, Nassan Gobran and a group of local visionaries recognized the need for a place where artists could work and teach together. In 1958 they established Sedona’s first art center, “Canyon Kiva.” They later purchased the old George and Helen Jordan fruit packing barn - now known as the Art Barn - which quickly became the community’s creative and social hub. In 1961, the name was changed to the Sedona Arts Center.
The new exhibit will be on display at the Museum through mid-January, 2009.
