Rugs Rugs Rugs Exhibition at Turquoise Tortoise Gallery
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery celebrates the tradition and skills represented in weavings by the renowned Hernandez family of Zapotec Indians. During the month of November the gallery will showcase fine rugs, runners and pillow-covers created by Felipe Hernandez and 11 additional members of his family in the exhibition called “Rugs, Rugs, Rugs.”
Many factors allow the Hernandez rugs to stand above the competition, chiefly their sole use of natural dyes. Many weavers claim this distinction but few resist the urge to benefit from the expediency of synthetic dyes. Using the leaves of an indigo plant to create deep rich blue takes three days of process; the use of cochineal is the next most labor-intensive. This is a natural dye from the larvae of a bug grown on three different kinds of cactus at a farm that supplies the Hernandez family. The commitment to traditional methods passed down from many generations of weavers is important to the family and the expertise this entails is their hallmark.
Traditional methods also benefit clients of the rugs: each piece retains all the natural lanolin in the wool which acts as a natural water-repellent. Any liquid spilled will bead allowing for easy cleaning. While singular designs and color choices mark the work of the Hernandez family, the fastness of their natural dyes is a further distinction. Adding to the dye the mineral alum is one way to make the color fast. Color-fastness can also be obtained by adding lemon juice, vinegar and avocado skins and, along with the tightness of weave is the mark of a truly exemplary rug.
