As part of the 2008 50th Anniversary Sedona Public Library Celebration weekly Author Series, Ken Zoll will be discussing his latest book, Sinagua Sunwatchers: An Archaeoastronomy Survey of the Sacred Mountain Basin, on Friday, November 14, at noon. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Si Birch Community Room. Copies of Zoll's books will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
Sinagua Sunwatchers was first published in 2006 to describe the 800 year-old solar calendar discovered at the V-Bar-V Heritage Site. As a result of discoveries made at the site after the initial publication, a revised edition was released in 2007. Since that time further discoveries have revealed how the Ancient Ones determined the exact day to create the equinox and solstice petroglyphs engraved at the calendar site. This new discovery is discussed in a new, full-color publication entitled Sinagua Sunwatchers: An Archaeoastronomy Survey of the Sacred Mountain Basin.
Zoll will discuss the latest discoveries and provide a preview of some of the many other calendar sites since discovered throughout the Verde Valley.
Zoll is a volunteer docent at the V-Bar-V Heritage Site and at the Palatki Red Cliffs Heritage Site. He is a member and President of the Verde Valley Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society. He is also the Chair of the Cultural Resources Committee of Friends of the Forest Sedona. His degrees include a B.S. and M.B.A. from Loyola University of Chicago.
Zoll came to Sedona after 35 years of Federal Service in Chicago and Washington, D.C. His last position was as Chief Information Technology Officer (CIO) for a Federal agency. After moving to Sedona in 2004 he completed a variety of archaeology courses, including several certification courses given by the Arizona Archaeological Society, including "Archaeoastronomy of the Southwest." He is now a certified instructor for the Society in archaeoastronomy.
Zoll is currently involved in the continued study of many new archaeoastronomy sites reported within the Verde Valley. He is also called upon to consult on other potential calendar sites in Arizona. One current project involves documenting reported calendrical devices at the Casa Malpais Ruins near Springerville for the Center for Desert Archaeology. The results of many of these new studies will be included in a 2009 book entitled Prehistoric Astronomy of Central Arizona.
