On a steamy, August morning the bodies of Andrew Borden, a wealthy businessman and his wife, Abby, were found bludgeoned to death. The youngest daughter Lizzie became the only suspect. Innocent in a court of law. Guilty in the court of public opinion. Condemned by society. One of the most notorious figures in the annals of American crime stands before you to tell her side of the story. Was it murder? You be the judge. Award winning actress, Jill Dalton, will be performing her solo play Lizzie Borden Live, at the Canyon Moon Theatre October 16 to November 2.
The play enjoyed a successful run at the East Lynne Theater in New Jersey where it garnered standing ovations. "Dalton is nothing less than superb in her depiction of the character, as her Lizzie is alternately sweet, innocent, witty and savagely murderous." Ed Wismer, Cape May Star and Wave.
Cottonwood's Bill Armstrong saw one of the first previews of Lizzie and encouraged Artistic Director Mary Guaraldi to bring the play to CMT audiences. "It will be on Broadway someday," he said with conviction. Armstrong, who has worked with Dalton several times on Law & Order, told Guaraldi Dalton was brilliant and the show was fantastic.
Lizzie Borden, directed by Jack McCullough with original music by three-time Tony nominated orchestrator, Larry Hochman, challenges the audience to rethink the legend that is Lizzie Borden.
Playwright/performer Jill Dalton received the 2007 Jacoby Award for most outstanding performance by an actress for her portrayal of Lizzie. Dalton is a veteran of feature film and television including parts on: Law & Order, Saturday Night Live, Wall Street, Another World and All My Children.
The play is directed by Jack McCullough a graduate of the Trinity Repertory Conservatory in Providence, RI. As an actor he has appeared on: Third Watch, Desperate Measures, The Observer, Osmosis Jones, Spenser: for Hire, Mr. North and Providence. He also directed Jill Dalton's solo play, My Life in the Trenches, in NYC to very enthusiastic audiences. The original music is by Larry Hochman. Among his many achievements are three Tony nominations for Best Orchestrations: Spamalot, Fiddler on the Roof and A Class Act.
Lizzie Borden Live previews on Thursday, October 16 and Friday, October 17, and opens on Saturday, October 18. The show will run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 with a Sunday matinee at 3 through November 2. Preview tickets are $16. During the run of the show, tickets are $19.
