Jerome Rocks
Jerome Rocks
No loud, raucous music - just rocks, real rocks, like limestone, jasper and quartz.  Jerome State Historic Park will be holding a day long activity to learn a little geology and about minerals. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is part of the Flagstaff Science Fest.  Visitors will have an opportunity to do hands-on geology. Learn about the acid test, use a rock hammer, explore the fossils of Jerome, find natural magnets and learn how the rocks in the Verde Valley were formed.

The Mingus Gem and Mineral Club
will be showing off the beautiful world of minerals and gems.  Learn about collecting minerals, polishing them and just enjoying them for their beauty.

The Verde Valley was once part of a shallow ocean.  When the water receded, other geologic forces molded and twisted the many different ocean deposits.  Fossils formed, layers of quartz were deposited, and tectonic movement folded layers in a variety of ways.  All of these activities made possible the copper mining in Jerome and the gypsum and limestone mining still going on today.

What’s the difference between a rock and a mineral?
Rocks are combinations of minerals and can be large like a mountain or small like a pebble.  Minerals are substances that have a specific chemical composition with specific physical properties.  Rocks are composed of minerals, but a mineral is a mineral:  for example, turquoise has the same chemical structure no matter where it is found.

The Flagstaff Science Fest is a two-week adventure in science.  Check out their website at www.scifest.org for more fun things to do but join us at Jerome State Park and discover that a rock isn't just a rock. The park will also be holding a mineral sale.

Jerome State Historic Park is located at 100 Douglas Road in Jerome, Arizona.  Call 928-634-5381 for information.
