Jerome First Saturday Art Walk
Jerome First Saturday Art Walk
A warm and sultry night filled with art, music and gallery hopping is in store for the First Saturday Art Walk in Jerome.  Visit 30 galleries and studios throughout this charming mountain town from 5 ¨C 8 p.m. A free shuttle runs during the walk from The Studios at The Old Jerome High School up to the top level of the town and the furniture and stained glass gallery, StahlKraft.

Image: Susan Congdon paintings will be featured at The Spirit Art Gallery during August Art Walk.

Spirit Art Gallery will be featuring Prescott artist, Susan Congdon, who works in oils. Congdon has a passion for spirit and nature, and focuses her creativity on Western and Native American subjects. Award-winning musician William Hoshal, who has been influenced by R. Carlos Nakai, Robert Tree Cody, and Douglas Spotted Eagle, will provide entertainment. He incorporates the traditional native flute into the harmonic and rhythmic structures of jazz and contemporary classical music.

Pura Vida Gallery will be featuring new work by ceramic artist Harry Leaf.  Leaf's whimsical high-fired goddess sculptures have enticed many customers to become a 'Harry Leaf Collector.'  It's hard to just have one, as each goddess is a one-of-a-kind creation.  Working out of his Castro Street studio in San Francisco, the 'Leaf Goddesses' capture the wit and charm of this whacky artist's vision

The Fool on the Hill celebrates Art Walk with new jewelry creations by Jerome designer Christy Fisher. Using recycled glass, Christy has created a fantastic new collection with hammered silver and bronze. A wine and chocolate reception will be held at the store from 5-8 p.m. Come and join the artist for a celebration of fun and affordable art to wear. The Fool on the Hill is located at 507B Main Street. Fisher¡¯s sister store- Magpie- is located right next door at 510 Main Street, and will also be open for the celebration.

Raina Gentry is the featured artist at the ever-changing Jerome Artist¡¯s Co-op. She is a mixed media artist from Prescott, and her "Retrospective: The Last 10 Years" will run through September 4.

Altai Leather will debut a colorful tote bag in sky blue, pink, red, lavender, and pink.  Along with that, leather artist Kelly has been creating new tooling designs for belts ranging from 3/4" to 1 3/4" in all sorts of color schemes. Stop in to say hello to the new owners and artists at this one of a kind studio.

Gallery 527 will feature an all new group show by its fine member artists with music by Jerome favorites, Silver Shadow. Donna Chesler has a new Polaroid transfer on papyrus, Libby MacKinney will show her recent painting of Summer Fruit, Ninfa shows a lovely new piece painted in South America, Marian Ward will be showing her award winning fine silver bracelet, and Lorraine Fexas has a stunning lavender fused glass plate just out of the kiln.

Stahlkraft Gallery is pleased to feature beautiful Tumacacori Mesquite.  These include wall hangings and handcrafted tabletops that complement unique steel based designed in an Arts & Crafts movement motif by Daniel Tharp.  Art Flores and his staff at Tumacacori Mesquite in Tumacacori, Arizona, specialize in creating custom mesquite masterpieces.  Velvet mesquite, a slow growth wood harvested respectfully from Mexican deserts, is harder than oak or maple and does not degrade in weather.  It varies in tones from lemon, honey and caramel to burgundy and from straight grained to highly figured burled, quilted, birds eye and fiddle back.  The American Hardwood Association classifies mesquite as ¡°replenishable, rare and exotic.¡±

The new show at the Hemleben Gallery in the Old Jerome High School is "The Fruits of the Year" illustrating the Plein Air locations and the story of the painter¡¯s journey with his easel.  From apple blossom to apricots, the past six months have provided Hemleben with seasonal appointments. Blossoms and fruit may linger for a few days, yet Hemleben succeeds in documenting these fragments of time and color in nature and preserving them on canvas.

But there are more than these treasures of the garden on display. Numerous painting trips have provided consecutive days of subject reference. Several brilliant panoramas of the Grand Canyon hold the moments around sunset.  A trip in May to Tahoe broke the pallet from the typical desert colors, and introduces the cool blues of the lake and surrounding Mountains.

Also new, and a compliment to Hemleben's painting are the vivid textual paintings of Jerome artist, Sally Murphy.   Her series of six new paintings will be on display at the Hemleben Gallery, Building A.

In Building B at the Old High School, fiber artist Vicki Day has been inspired by the recent monsoons and resulting rainbows.  A spectrum of colors is fixed into fabric and holds the most tantalizing richness.  Once dyed the fabric is embellished with beaded leaves and enamel and glass cabochons that transforms into Day¡¯s signature design books.

Derryl Day, also in Building B, is mostly unaware of the days of the week.  However his eye and heart are acutely tuned into the filtered light and seasonal cloudscapes painting like a happy madman. His newest work of the Tanner Basin will be completed for First Saturday Art Walk.

In Building C, Robin Anderson and Margot Mandette host a gracious space in the largest space of the historic Jerome High School complex.  Over three decades of creativity will burst off the walls and often the most enchanting time to see the work anew is when the paintings are lit at night.
