The August Bell Rock Plaza Art and Craft Show promises to be an exciting break in the long summer with an impressive lineup of artists, some participating for the first time. Displays will include baskets, metal furniture, leather, pottery, jewelry, photography, clothing, sculpture, and plenty of paintings from some world-class artists. Over 35 artists will attend.
Julian Soncco from Scottsdale will be showing for the first time in about 10 years. Julian is from Peru and after his official art training at Bellas Artes, Carlos Baca Flor of Arequipa, he began work in the commercial field for a large Peruvian department store. He continued his education at Bella Artes and was chosen to work for two well-known television stars doing set design and building as they traveled throughout Peru. This experience exposed him to the incredible beauty of the country, which eventually became his inspiration. Julian works in watercolor and oil and while living in Mexico City earned three national watercolor awards, enhancing his international reputation. He paints very large pieces, often 40 x 60 and enjoys the desert scenes of Arizona.
Arlene Zaloznik is a basket weaver from El Paso, Texas. She weaves traditional plaited baskets from rattan reed and makes her own stains from walnut hulls. She weaves pine needle gourd baskets and cleans and finishes the gourds with furniture polish. The baskets are embellished with natural gemstones, antler pieces and beads. She also makes waxed linen and silk thread coiled baskets, which are the most time intensive, often taking days to complete. No two baskets are alike. She exhibits in art shows in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona.
Surrounded by beautiful red rock scenery, Bell Rock Plaza is centrally located in the Village of Oak Creek - Gateway to Sedona, on State Route 179.
