Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Spotlights Hand Woven Rugs
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Spotlights Hand Woven Rugs
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery  will be showcasing exquisite hand-woven rugs by the renowned Hernandez family, Zapotec Indians from Oaxaca’s central valleys in the foothills of the Sierra Madres in Mexico.  The gallery, now in its 37th year, has one of the finest collections of rugs and pillow-covers from Felipe Hernandez and his skilled extended family.

The Zapotec are distinctly known for the tightness of their weave and the brilliance of their all-natural dyes.  Using ancient recipes, the Zapotec produce some of the most permanent natural dyes available.  Traditionally, it is the Zapotec women who prepare the dyes, card wool from the sheep they raise and dye the wool; it is the Zapotec men who are traditionally the weavers, using horizontal and, sometimes, the original style of back-strap looms.  From a young age children learn to spin yarn and make small decorative hangings and nearly everyone in a weaving family is involved in some aspect of the tradition by tending sheep, building looms or spinning yarn.

In the Hernandez family, Felipe works alongside his wife Maria to create the dyes that have helped give his family its top reputation.  He also directs the sizing and design of every rug and is considered a true artist whose rugs are known for their uniqueness.
