Canyon Moon Theatre Presents Arizona Premiere of Trying
Canyon Moon Theatre Presents Arizona Premiere of Trying
The boss is an aging legend, cantankerous but charismatic. The new assistant is young and vulnerable, but full of grit. And then the fun begins. Based on the playwright's own real-life experience, the play is a hopeful and humorous tale of friendship amidst life's most inevitable adventure -- growing old.

This in a nutshell describes the next production at Canyon Moon Theatre of the acclaimed Trying by playwright Joanna Glass.  Canyon Moon Theatre's artistic director, Mary Guaraldi, has scored a coup by securing the rights to Trying prior to its national tour.  This production will mark the show's Arizona premiere and there will only be six performances.

Judge Biddle, about to turn 82 when the play opens in the fall of 1967, has developed the comfortable habit of unleashing his frustration on a series of unsatisfactory secretaries. His relationship with his latest assistant gets off to a far from promising start when Sarah commits the grievous error of being early.

"You probably wanted to make an impression on your first day," the judge says gruffly. "You'll find, if you stay, that I'm far more impressed by adherence to rules." Of these there are many, from the proper placement of the judge's mail and his coffee tray to the absolute ban on adjusting the radiators.

The drama takes place in an office overtop his garage in Georgetown since he claims one of his prior personal secretaries burned down his previous office.   He has had several secretaries and all have quit since Biddle is an impossible old curmudgeon.

This richly scripted story is inspired by the playwright's own experiences as the personal secretary to the real Judge Biddle, Attorney General under FDR and Chief Judge of the Nuremberg Trials. Trying stars Robert Bays as Judge Francis Biddle and Amzell Magaletti as Sarah Schorr.

Trying will preview on Thursday, April 24.  There will be performances on Friday, April 25, Sunday, April 27, Thursday, May 1, Friday, May 2 and it will close on Saturday, May 3.  Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m.  Sunday performances are at 3 p.m.
