Turquoise Tortoise Contemporary Gallery Features B.A. Miller

The Turquoise Tortoise Contemporary Gallery features B.A. Miller, showcasing the artist's three-dimensional wall platters created through the surprising art of paper casting. A special exhibit of Miller's works will be held May 16, 17 and 18. B.A. Miller is a bright and charming multi-faceted artist whose personality clearly expresses itself in the crisp colors, interesting textures, unique forms and strong compositions of his art. Preferring not to limit his creative expression, Miller works in such varied mediums as sculpture, collage, acrylic on canvas, and cast paper. When asked how he creates his unique cast paper pieces, Miller explains that each piece is formed by casting 100% cotton paper on clay relief molds that he makes in his studio. Once the platter shape is dry, it is primed with gesso readying it for its final composition. Color is added in the form of acrylic pigments, oil paints, metallic inks and powders, as well as gold, copper, silver, and variegated composition metal leaf. The iridescent and metallic paints add depth, hand-made mosaic tiles add texture, and the imported gold leaf adds richness. Accent lines are created using composition gold leafing. The last step in this labor-intensive process is to apply multiple coats of epoxy resin. This protective coating not only adds stability but also creates a glass-like appearance.
