Lanning Gallery Features Sedona Artist Randall LaGro
You want to look, and look again, at a Randall LaGro painting; noticing the slightest detail can change your interpretation of these subtly complex, often mysterious paintings. The artist’s oil paintings and monotypes will be featured in May at Sedona’s Lanning Gallery in “Exposed Intuition.”
A word or phrase or passage of music may be the genesis of a LaGro painting but, visually, there is no exact plan when he begins to paint. The first strokes or washes of paint contain the key to what will follow. The most important characteristic of the artist’s work remains his intuition. “I look at what’s there and say, ‘Talk to me,’” LaGro explains. For him this beginning is the most exciting part of creating a painting, the part that he considers a total mystery. From here the seed of a concept grows until elements of his experience and technique are called upon to bring a canvas to fruition.
LaGro prefers washes and fast, expressionistic strokes, occasionally working sand or mica into the paint, often impressing patterns into wet paint with lace or linen, or “drawing” on the canvas with any one of the myriad tools and objects he collects for such purposes. A careful look underneath various strokes and washes may reveal detailed patterning while a study of abstract paint strokes often reveals recognizable shapes: Human and animal forms appear or recede before abstract elements of interwoven texture. It is this representation of the layers of conscious and unconscious reality that most distinguishes a LaGro painting.
When the artist speaks of his intent words such as contemplation and peace come up as does the concept of touching the positive sides of our humanity. “I’m asking you to take a little time to look into yourself,” he says, “and be within that contemplative place.” Reality, poetry and memory all equally coexist in LaGro’s work; the artist’s modern psyche is represented with an old world feel.
“I’m striving to address the everyday guy as well as painters, poets and philosophers,” LaGro says. A welcome elusiveness in the artist’s paintings and monotypes invites each viewer to bring in their own unique experience.
