Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Show by Native American Artist Chuck Reddick
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Show by Native American Artist Chuck Reddick
At Sedona’s Turquoise Tortoise Gallery, collectors count on having a wide variety of art to choose  from.  During May, the gallery of Native American art features the work of Chuck “Winter Heart” Reddick who uses traditional methods and materials to meticulously recreate warrior shirts that, for collectors, make unique and stunning wall art.

For Reddick, who has also created traditional dance regalia for Native Americans, his path began with a car accident in the Dakotas over thirty years ago.  He spent his recovery on a Lakota Sioux reservation and it was there he learned the Plains Indian culture and the techniques for making the traditional shirts and other items he fashions today.

Reddick meticulously creates each piece using only traditional methods and materials.  His dyes are from plants and minerals such as red from prickly pear juice, yellow from Mormon tea and purple from sweetgrass.  Many of his beads are antique trade beads.  One of the shirts he has made is a Yankton Sioux/Cheyenne Warrior Shirt and Breastplate whose source material was a George Catlin painting of Grey Wolf, one of the chiefs who met with Lewis and Clark on their 1804 trip.  It took five deer hides, “aged” with stain from walnut shells, to create it.  Hailstone markings (a symbol of strength) are painted onto the shirt.  Forty-two black human-hair ties are attached with red trade wool, each tie representing a kill.  Approximately 6500 seed beads are sewn onto the shirt using the early “lazy stitch,” with approximately 100 beads filling a square inch.  Round brass buttons from old high-button shoes, discs from red-line turtle shells and black bear claws complete the authentic look.

Reddick has been involved with pre-1840s historical re-enactment of the fur trade era for the past fifteen years and is a member of one of the oldest black powder clubs in the United States.  In 1993, the artist was the first in the nation to organize an authentic powwow/rendezvous with 25 Native Americans and 25 mountain men.  Three dance drums and thirty-six singers entertained over 4000 visitors to the encampment of 25 tipis and an authentic mountain-man camp.  Reddick has also brought his unique skills and knowledge to Head Start as a special education teacher, offering demonstrations of living history to over 7,000 students.  For further information on the reception and Reddick’s unique artwork, contact Turquoise Tortoise Gallery, located in Hozho Center in the heart of “Gallery Row,” 431 Highway 179, Sedona.
