Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Celebrates Comanche Artist Nocona Burgess
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Celebrates Comanche Artist Nocona Burgess
This month Turquoise Tortoise Gallery in Sedona celebrates Comanche artist Nocona Burgess; the gallery hosts an opening reception on Friday, March 7, from 5-8 p.m., as part of the Sedona Gallery Association’s “1st Friday” event.  Burgess, originally from Lawton, Oklahoma, is the great-great grandson, on his mother’s side, of arguably the most famous Comanche Indian history has to offer: Chief Quanah Parker. His father is also a former chief of the Comanche tribe. This notable heritage, coupled with artists throughout both sides of his family tree, left Burgess with little choice but to excel.

Fortunate to travel throughout the country as a child, while his parents worked on their degrees, Burgess had the opportunity to live in and learn from many locations.  He received an Associate in Fine Arts degree from the prestigious Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe before going on to pursue studies in both Studio art and Native art history.  But he found himself questioning whether art was the way to go; whether he could make a living at it.  Burgess began working at a bingo hall, soon to be a casino, and drifted from art.  He found himself promoted and soon advanced into management.  The income was great but his work schedule left no time for school and definitely no time for art.

After five years, Burgess walked away, rededicating himself to art.  He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and success in the art world soon followed.  “After graduation, my first show was at Red Earth in Oklahoma City.  [I was asked] to be in a show in Holland, and from there the show traveled to Belgium and Germany . . . I have come full circle and my passion for painting is alive in my soul again.”

A bold style of elemental images is characteristic of Burgess' work; his paintings are straightforward and sophisticated and have garnered him numerous awards, commissions and published articles. Growing up around many fine traditional Native artists Burgess developed a love and respect for the old styles but, “I liked the idea of modern Indians; after all that’s who I am.  To this day I enjoy painting old portraits and traditional subjects, but in my own style.”

From horses to coyotes, raven and bison, the artist reinterprets the mythic animal images of his culture; each image incorporates a circle, the symbol of life's continuum.
