Canyon Country Community Lectures Presents Envisioning the Colorado Plateau with Alan Petersen

Envisioning the Colorado Plateau: The History of Art and Photography presented by Alan Petersen.

The first artists to visit the Colorado Plateau in the mid-nineteenth century were aesthetically confused and technically unprepared to effectively portray the landscape they found themselves in. It is in the art of Thomas Moran, William Henry Holmes and Jack Hillers, unified by the prose of Powell's chief geologist Clarence Dutton that we discover the vision of the Colorado Plateau that persists to this day.  The later team of artists and scientists brought together by John Wesley Powell defined our conception of the Colorado Plateau.

Alan Petersen, Museum of Northern Arizona Curator of Fine Arts and Coconino Community College Fine Arts Department Chair and Colorado Plateau Studies Coordinator, shares the work and images of these American visionaries.

Canyon Country Community Lectures are sponsored by Grand Canyon Association, NAU Cline Library, Coconino Community College Colorado Plateau Studies, Glendale Public Library, Grand Canyon National Park, and Sharlot Hall Museum.
