Sedona Public Library Features Joella Jean Mahoney in Weekly Author Series
As part of the 2008 50th Anniversary Sedona Public Library Celebration weekly Author Series, Joella Jean Mahoney will be discussing her two retrospective books, Cliff People, Figure in Landscape Series and Slide Rock Canyon, Rush to Meaning Series on Fridayat the library. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Si Birch Community Room. Copies of her books will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
Book I includes paintings from 1965 to 1985. Book II includes paintings from 1962 to 2002. These two books illustrate sixty major works produced by Mahoney over 40 years. Mahoney will also share pictures of paintings produced from 2002 to present. She will explain how motif develops through serial work.
For those seeking to understand the power of the Southwest Landscape, Joella Jean Mahoney's paintings are important, for they provide the viewer with a sense of place not found elsewhere. Mahoney's large, dramatic, landscapes in oil, inspired by the vividly colored terrain of Northern Arizona and Southern Utah, have earned praise for "their lambent color and relentless space." Her subject matter fuses the geological, the emotional, and the spiritual.
Mahoney has an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. She is Professor of Art Emerita, University of La Verne in La Verne, California. Mahoney's work is internationally known through the Art in the Embassies Program, sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Her work has been in numerous exhibits including an annual New York show and 50-year retrospectives at the Kolb Museum, South Rim Grand Canyon National Park, the Northern Arizona University Fine Art Museum, West Valley Art Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff. Her paintings are in many public and private collections.
Mahoney is a lifelong painter and has her home and studio in Sedona. Her vivid, powerful, large scale paintings are exhibited nationally and internationally. Mahoney's paintings are all inspired by places where she has hiked or backpacked. She paints studies on location and creates the large paintings in her studio.
