Sedona Public Library Presents The Bill West Quartet
Sedona Public Library Presents The Bill West Quartet
The Bill West Quartet featuring Bill West on trumpet, Steve Sandner on piano, Steve Douglas on bass and Kevin McQuaid on drums.
Admission: $15

Bill West’s melodic trumpet and flugelhorn stylings have been a fixture at Prescott’s “129-1/2 – An American Jazz Grille” for the past four years – a unique distinction afforded no other horn player of any instrument. The Bill West Trio – including guitar legend Jack Petersen and bassist Bryan Sinclair – specializes in reprising “forgotten gems” from the Great American Songbook, interspersed with familiar jazz standards from the bebop and post-bop eras. His jazz style has been likened to Chet Baker, though he lists his personal jazz heroes as piano genius Bill Evans, tenor virtuoso Zoot Sims and trumpeter Clark Terry, among others.

West grew up in Minneapolis loving the sounds of jazz and the Big Bands of the 40s and 50s. He began his trumpet studies at age 10, and played his first professional engagement at age 14. He led dance bands in high school and college, and later toured with the big bands of Sonny Dunham, JohnnyBothwell and Sam Donahue. He also played in a mafia-owned night club band backing such music superstars as Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Lena Horne, and was a staff musician at the NBC affiliate radio station in the Twin Cities. A brief military career found him in U. S. Army bands with jazz greats MoseAllison and the legendary tenor sax player, Warne Marsh.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a business degree, Bill moved to Los Angeles and began a 40-year-long career in advertising. He resumed his first love, music, in the mid-90s after retiring to Arizona. In addition to leading the Bill West Trio, he’s a co-leader of the Killer Beez swingtet, the Geritol Hipsters dixieland group and the Petersen-West Little Big Band. Bill has been the featured trumpet soloist with the Yavapai College Big Band I since 1998, and is a frequent performer with other big band and jazz combo groups throughout the area.

His concert selections at the Sedona Library on April 20 will be based on the theme of “Forgotten Gems from the Great American Songbook”, and will include lesser-known tunes by America’s greatest songwriters – Ellington, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and many more. He’ll be backed by a rhythm section of Sedona’s finest jazz performers – bassist Steve Douglas, Steve Sandner on piano, and Kevin McQuaid on bass. Bill’s new Trio CD – Reflections– was released in March, 2008, and will be available at the concert.
