Sedona Heritage Museum Presents History of Military Action In the Verde Valley
Sedona Heritage Museum Presents History of Military Action In the Verde Valley
The Sedona Historical Society is hosting the first in their 2008 series of Living History presentations on Wednesday, January 9th at 9:00 a.m. at the Sedona Heritage Museum.  ¡°The History of Military Action in the Verde Valley¡± will be presented by Dennis Lockhart, a Ranger at the Fort Verde Historic State Park.

Lockhart is a historical speaker for state, national, museum and university programs.  He is also a historical re-enactor who performs as General Crook, among other characters.

The presentation will trace Verde Valley military history and its impacts from the moment the first Army personnel arrived before the end of the Civil War, in 1865.  He will share stories about troop living conditions and their mission to prevent Indians from raiding ranch and farm settlers.  This encampment ended after four months and was soon replaced by a more permanent camp located not far from the Army base known as Fort Camp Verde.  He will describe the harsh area with its¡¯ few roads and the beginning of settlement with farm and ranch folk.  At the time, Arizona was a territory only recently separated from New Mexico and was dependent upon the Federal Government for security and protection.  Learn more about this historical time and the role of the Army.

Everyone is welcome to join the Sedona Historical Society for this presentation.  Mr. Lockhart will be available after his talk for questions, and refreshments will be served.  This is a free event.

Every year, the Sedona Historical Society presents a series of Living History talks.  Scheduled 2008 topics include, area volcanic action, local archeology issues, and women¡¯s perspective of and role in area ranching.  Speakers will include descendants of pioneers, long-time residents with historical stories to share or other story-tellers about history.  The Sedona Historical Society also operates the Sedona Heritage Museum.  The Museum is located at 735 Jordan Road in Uptown Sedona and is open daily 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  For more information on Living History or the Museum, call 928-282-7038.
