Lanning Gallery Introduces Sarah Vaaler
Lanning Gallery Introduces Sarah Vaaler
Amongst the international and national artists that continue to be showcased at Sedona¡¯s Lanning Gallery are a handful of emerging artists who are fast making their mark on the art world.  In January, to begin the New Year, the gallery celebrates one of its newest artists.  Friday evening, January 4th, from 5-8 p.m. an artist¡¯s reception will introduce visitors to Sarah Vaaler ¨C and to the sophisticated abstract paintings, of great depth, that define her.

Vaaler, who has gravitated toward art her entire life, worked in advertising and publishing for many years.  ¡°Although I took studio art and photography classes in high school and college and beyond,¡± she says, ¡°the idea of having a career as a fine artist didn¡¯t take hold until my fortieth birthday . . . The process of finding a vision was a long process for me.  I never considered selling my work in galleries until that vision gelled and until my ability to master certain techniques could keep up with my vision.  And for me that occurred at middle age.¡±

The staggering skills and vision that now flood Vaaler¡¯s canvases are a testament to the power of patience.  Her hallmark is a layered dimensionality of amorphous shapes in striking non-uniform color fields.  She works quickly, painting on a wet canvas that is lying flat; acrylics are her medium of choice.  This technique allows for varying amounts of color to melt together; highlights and obscurations follow in additional layers.  A glossy finish brings out the layers of color on each piece, an effect not unlike looking at rocks under water.

At a time in her life when she is devoted to expressing herself as a fine artist, Vaaler is also expressing herself as a wife and mother to two pre-teen children.  And while school hours may be her most productive, fine art consumes her twenty-four hours a day - now that her dynamic artistic vision is ready for harvest.  For further information, call Lanning Gallery at 928.282.6865, email mail@lanninggallery.com, or visit www.lanninggallery.com.  Open daily: 10-6 Mon-Sat, 11-5 Sun.
