Rock Art of the Colorado Plateau
Rock Art of the Colorado Plateau
CANYON COUNTRY COMMUNITY LECTURE SERIES

Rock Art of the Colorado Plateau Presented by Kelley Hayes-Gilpin

Kelley Hayes-Gilpin presents an overview of the rock paintings and engravings of the Colorado Plateau. SheˇŻll talk about why understanding rock art in this region requires comparisons with pottery, textiles and basketry; discuss traditional histories and cosmologies of Native American communities in relation to rock art; and reveal evidence of ancient ritual practices, migrations, pilgrimages and landscapes.

Kelley Hays-Gilpin is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Northern Arizona University, where she teaches courses on archaeological ceramics, rock art and archaeological theory. She also holds the Edward Bridge Danson Chair of Anthropology at the Museum of Northern Arizona, where she directs the Hopi Iconography Project. This project, a collaboration between the museum and the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office, explores Hopi cultural continuity through pottery, rock art, mural painting, and fiber perishables, including baskets and textiles. She received her PhD in anthropology at the University of Arizona in 1992. Her book Ambiguous Images: Gender and Rock Art received the 2005 Society for American Archaeology Book award.

Canyon Country Community Lectures are sponsored by Grand Canyon Association, NAU Cline Library, Coconino Community College Colorado Plateau Studies, Grand Canyon National Park, Sharlot Hall Museum and Glendale Public Library.
