Sedona Public Library Presents On The Line Documentary

The Cultural Diversity Council of the Verde Valley, Jewish Cultural Endowment Fund, and Sedona Public Library are pleased to present “On The Line,” a documentary film which focuses on “The Minutemen Civil Defense Corps,” a controversial organization that patrols the U. S. border. The Minutemen describe themselves as a neighborhood watch group whose mission is to secure that border.

The film also follows one journalist’s story, Carolyn Brown, an adjunct NAU professor, who struggles with her own identity during the nearly two years spent documenting the Minutemen.  The daughter of an immigrant, a Latina woman with mixed ethnicity and a journalist, Brown finds her place among the Minutemen, and eventually is forced to look at her own ethnicity and where she fits within American society.  Now teaching Journalism and Television/Film at Northern Arizona University’s School of Communication, Brown previously worked as a producer at the national level at MSNBC News and Fox News Channel, and as a producer in local news in San Francisco, Washington DC, and Phoenix.  She has also published on MSNBC.COM, as a contributor and commentator, her career in broadcast news spanning a 13-year period.  Her credentials include an MA in Liberal Studies with a focus on Immigration and Race Relations from Northern Arizona University and BA in Political Science and Art/Art History from Colgate University.  Her web site, which has a trailer of the film, is http://carolynebrown.com.

“This film is about how we identify ourselves, who we are as Americans, and who we want to be,” says Brown of “On The Line.” The documentary premiered at the Museum of Northern Arizona in October ,2007.  A discussion and question and answer session will follow the screening with  Brown.   There is no charge but donations to No Mas Muertas ( No More Deaths), a humanitarian group that supplies water and supplies to those stranded in the desert will be accepted.
