Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Celebrates Native American Jewelry
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery Celebrates Native American Jewelry
This month Turquoise Tortoise Gallery celebrates the many Native American jewelers whose work continues to beat as the heart of this successful gallery – now in its thirty-seventh year.  On Friday, December 7, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., the gallery stays open late to offer refreshments and a wealth of information to visitors enjoying an evening of gallery hopping during the Sedona Gallery Association’s “1st Friday, Evening in the Galleries” event.

“Over almost four decades we’ve come to be known for original paintings, sculpture and so many other things too,” Gallery Director Patricia Knight explains; “but our jewelry collection keeps visitors coming back again and again.  Especially around the holidays.”

The gallery began as a small outlet for customers to purchase high-quality Native American jewelry and has steadily grown since then.  Solid relationships with many of the primarily Navajo jewelers show in the fact that over half have sold their work through the gallery for more than two decades.  Second and even third generation silversmiths are now creating pieces for the gallery.

“We’ve found that the Navajo jewelers are not only incredibly talented but are also aware of their marketplace and of the trends that affect their livelihood,” Knight says.  While the gallery will always carry traditional turquoise and silver pieces, contemporary trends are evident.  The relatively new style of inlay work is displayed widely as are pieces with 14k gold worked into their designs.  While traditional methods like stamping and channel work can be seen in the newer styles it is the wider palette that most distinguishes these pieces.

Green stones such as Carico Lake turquoise and gaspeite are in evidence as are the purple tones of sugilite and spiny oyster shell.  Spiny oyster shell (traditionally traded from coastal tribes) also offers orange tones close to the look of coral, which also takes a prime spot at the gallery.  Lapis, mother-of-pearl, the always-lovely blue turquoise and other stones round out the many hues Native jewelry now offers.  Some of the well-known jewelers whose work the gallery offers include David and Alice Lister, their daughter Dee Nez, Jack and Mary Tom, Bryan Yellowhorse, Tommy Jackson, Ric Charlie and the Native American group of jewelers called Supersmiths.

Knight adds, “There is so much talent out there and we’re excited to be a way-station for the very best.”

The reception closes another weeklong SGA “Art of Gold” event.  Turquoise Tortoise Gallery is located at Hozho Center in the heart of Sedona’s “Gallery Row,” 431 Highway 179.  Call 928-282-2262, email mail@turqtortsedona.com, or visit www.turqtortsedona.com for more information.  Open daily: 10:00-6:00 Monday-Saturday, 11:00-5:00 Sunday.
