The Institute For EcoTourism Presents Environmental Sustainability Symposium
The Institute For EcoTourism Presents Environmental Sustainability Symposium
The Solet Initiative of Phoenix is proud to announce the Sedona kickoff of Symposiums on Environmental Sustainability and Sustainable Communities, Awakening the Dreamer.  The event is co-sponsored by the Institute for Eco-Tourism Sustainable Arizona (IET), Local First-Arizona, Los Abrigados Resort, and Pachamama Alliance.  The half-day event is open to the public and will be held at the Los Abrigados Resort and Spa.  These symposiums are being produced across the state through strong partnerships connecting attendees with avenues for engagement. The formal program begins at Noon, and will end at 4:00 p.m.  A community reception will follow from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This forum provides an opportunity to explore some of the greatest issues of our time concerning environment, economics, social justice, and community.  Thoroughly researched and thoughtfully presented, facilitators are aided by video, graphics, and audience participation.  Leading experts and contemporary thinkers featured include:  Van Jones, Paul Hawken, Julia Butterfly Hill, Randy Hayes, Thomas Berry, and more.

Join herbalist Diane Dearmore (IET Executive Director) at 9:30 a.m., for an introduction to the wild native plants of Sedona and this unique high desert region. Sample the aromas and tastes of the local edible and medicinal herbs while enjoying an early morning hike.

The sponsors have developed this partnership to create spaces for dialogue and connection for Valley residents.  With so much in the media about climate change and "going green," this event is an opportunity to learn more and take the next step for sustainability with others in the community.  Symposiums are planned for Tempe, Sedona, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Parker and other communities in Arizona, throughout 2007  and 2008.  The symposiums have been featured in Tucson since 2006 and hosted in Scottsdale in September.

Background:  Awakening the Dreamer

Changing the Dream Symposiums were developed by the Pachamama Alliance of San Francisco who works with several tribes in the Amazon basin of Ecuador (the Achuar in particular.)  The Achuar elders requested that the Pachamama Alliance help them by helping to change the ¡¯Dream¡¯ of the modern industrial world - one based on boundless consumption and growth - which threatens their survival.  The Pachamama Alliance created this symposium inviting participants to explore current conditions as well as possibilities for the future.  Thousands of concerned individuals have attended the symposiums in UK, France, Belgium, Mexico, Australia, Canada and US.  It is a conversation with the heart and mind not to be missed!
