Alex Sepkus month continues through the end of November, at Geoffrey Roth located under the Bell Tower in Tlaquepaque. Geoffrey Roth has carried this very successful jewelry line for over six years. The intricate and very unusual designs make these colorful pieces of jewelry very desirable.
The New York jewelry designer Alex Sepkus was born in Lithuania where he studied industrial design and graduated from the Lithuania Academy of Arts. His studies included, among other things, sculpture, graphics, glass making and etchings. His final graduate work was, however, in jewelry design. At that time gold was very precious and rare in Lithuania and Alex had to learn to work with very small amounts of metal. What seemed like a handicap then helped him later on to step out of the traditional way of looking at jewelry and jewelry making.
In 1988 he and his wife immigrated to the United States. Here his outstanding capabilities as a craftsman were quickly discovered and he worked for some of the best companies in New York City, for many as an outside contractor to make their most difficult creations. This is where he met Jeff Feero, a fellow goldsmith with a good business sense. Soon after opening their own shop in New York City, Alex came across his unique style for which he is still well known today.
Alex’s fascination with etchings had led him to play with intricate texturing of the surface, either by carving minute details in the wax or by using stippling on the cast pieces. The result was definitely a very unique jewelry line, well known for its intricacy that reminds of medieval times, fairy tales and modernism at the same time. Alex Sepkus’ designs are “out of the box” and that makes them so refreshing and heartwarming. They are a delight not only to the touch but also to the eye. Customers are encouraged to look through a loop to see and admire the fine detail of the metal work.
Every stone is hand picked and dedicated for a specific piece of jewelry. You will not find two rings that are exactly the same. Many times it is the stone that speaks to you and that will make, together with the design, the piece you chose so very personal and dear to your heart.
While many designers start with a sketch or an unusual gemstone, Sepkus’ design process begins with hours of metal experimentation at the workbench, especially for his bracelets and necklaces. One of his designs, Rainbow, took seven weeks to develop its construction. “I wanted to create something with movement and fluidity,” says Alex. “My jewelry starts with a structure and then the design evolves.” Not surprisingly, Alex usually ignores jewelry and fashion trends.
To maintain his unorthodox jewelry style, Sepkus makes a point to hire craftsmen that have not been trained in jewelry making. His workshop, located in the heart of New York’s jewelry district on West 48th Street, employs about 12 jewelers, including an industrial designer from the Ukraine and a diamond-setter who was a sushi chef.
Alex and Jeff are what make the Alex Sepkus company tick. Together they decided a few years ago to refuse a very enticing offer and not to go mainstream but to stay a relatively small manufacturer. Mass production to them means 40 to 50 pieces and not 5000. This along with a very high quality standard makes this definitely a very attractive and interesting jewelry line.
